The NBA All-Star Game will have another new format next year, and this one will have a global feel.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver confirmed on Wednesday that the 2026 All-Star Game will feature a United States vs. the world competition.
It's uncertain exactly how the event will be held, but Silver acknowledged the new format while speaking on the TV show "Breakfast Ball" on Fox Sports 1.
The All-Star Game will be played in Inglewood, California on Feb. 15, which is about the midpoint of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
With most of the world already ensconced in patriotism and given the success of hockey's 4 Nations Face-off - the tournament which took the place of this year's NHL All-Star Game - Silver figured the timing is right for a global competition.
"What better time to feature some form of USA against the world?" Silver said on FS1. "I’m not exactly sure what the format will be yet. I obviously paid a lot of attention to what the NHL did, which was a huge success. ... But also, going back, last summer, our Olympic competition was a huge success."
The United States won a fifth consecutive gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and although approximately 70 per cent of NBA players are from America, the last seven NBA MVP winners have been international.
The decision to change the All-Star format yet again comes after the 2025 exhibition featured a four-team, three-game mini-tournament. The event was considered by many to be a flop.
