Parker laments untimely loss of concentration as Burnley eye turnaround

Burnley head coach Scott Parker has called for a strong response from his side after lapses in concentration have continued to undermine their Premier League return.

The Clarets sit 18th in the table after a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa before the international break, with Donyell Malen’s brace condemning them to a fifth league loss of the season.

Following their loss to Villa, Parker was left frustrated with his defence for “switching off” too often, making it easy for opposition sides to capitalise.

The defeat marked Burnley’s fourth straight away loss to start a league campaign for the first time since 2009/10.

Only during that same 2009/10 Premier League season have they conceded more goals (14) in their first four away matches than the 13 they have shipped this term.

“We were competitive [against Villa], but the second goal was poor from us,” Parker reflected.

“It's a young team and I think over the first seven games we have switched off at times. If you switch off for one second here you get punished.

“It’s another brand new team, it is a brand new defensive line and we are working tirelessly with that.

“We have switched off in certain moments and looked a bit young. There is frustration there because we have been really close.

“Perspective is something that I live by. We understand the challenge. We need to improve in certain areas and we will endeavour to do that.”

Leeds United, meanwhile, also suffered defeat before the break, falling to Tottenham as Mohammed Kudus delivered a goal and an assist to end Daniel Farke’s side’s 23-game unbeaten home run at Elland Road.

Despite dominating much of the attacking play, Leeds lacked a clinical edge when it mattered.

It was their first league defeat at home in over a year, but the trend when conceding first remains troubling. The Whites have now lost eight of their last 10 top-flight games after falling behind (W1 D1), including three of five so far this season.

Reflecting on their defeat, Dominic Calvert-Lewin said: “It is frustrating, given the work we put in to get ourselves in a good position. I think probably Spurs scored against the run of play and then we worked hard.

“There were chances from myself and others that on another day we should put in the back of the net, and ultimately this is the Premier League so you get punished.

“When I get chances, I expect myself to put them away so no one expects more from myself than myself."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Burnley – Jaidon Anthony

Burnley have had 56 shots in the Premier League this season, of which Jaidon Anthony has been directly involved in 19 (12 shots, seven chances created), at a ratio of 34%.

Only Erling Haaland for Manchester City (38%) has been involved in a higher proportion of their side’s shots so far this season.

Leeds – Anton Stach

Anton Stach is one of only seven players to both attempt 10+ shots (12) and create 10+ chances from open play (10) in the Premier League this season, leading all Leeds players in both metrics.

Against Spurs, Stach attempted nine passes inside the final third and won four of his seven duels.

MATCH PREDICTION: BURNLEY WIN

Premier League games between two newly promoted clubs have been won by the home side on each of the last three occasions, giving Burnley a slight edge ahead of Saturday’s encounter.

Only three of the previous 19 top-flight games between promoted sides had seen home wins before this (five draws, 11 away wins), while there hasn’t been four successive home wins in such fixtures since April to December 2012.

The Clarets have also lost just one of their last six home league games against Leeds (W3 D2). They are, however, winless in their last three (D2 L1) since a 1-0 Championship victory in April 2016.

Leeds have only lost one of their last six league meetings with Burnley (W3 D2), although the Whites failed to score in both Championship meetings between the two sides last season (D1 L1).

After their confidence-boosting 3-1 win over Wolves in September, Farke’s side are now looking to win consecutive Premier League away games for the first time since April 2022 under Jesse Marsch.

Leeds have, however, kept just one clean sheet in their last 24 away games in the top-flight (51 goals conceded), doing so via a 0-0 draw at Newcastle in December 2022.

OPTA WIN PROBABILITY

Burnley – 41.0%

Draw – 26.7%

Leeds – 32.2%
