Marquinhos never doubted PSG would get Bayern revenge

Marquinhos never doubted that Paris Saint-Germain would exact revenge against Bayern Munich in the Club World Cup quarter-finals, even when they were reduced to nine men.

PSG reached the last four of the revamped competition with a 2-0 win in Atlanta, with Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele on target.

However, that was not the full story as PSG finished the game two players down, following straight red cards for Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez.

Bayern had two goals disallowed and a possible stoppage-time penalty overturned, but Dembele struck PSG's second goal when they were playing with nine, leaving Marquinhos to hail their character.

The PSG captain was particularly pleased to get one over on Bayern, who had won four straight games against the French champions, including a 1-0 triumph in the group phase of the Champions League last November.

"It's an important moment for us. It was a difficult match," Marquinhos told DAZN.

"We really wanted to win this one. We had something to settle with Bayern. The last game we played against them, we lost.

"It's good to win this match, it's a competition that we care about, we want to do something. The red cards are details that we have to deal with. With one player more or less, it changes things.

"I looked at my team-mates, I saw everyone saying, 'we're going to defend until the end'. I was sure we were going to win this match. We saw the attitude, with 10 and with nine.

"We continued to play, and we scored the second goal even with one player down. The team is ready for anything.

"Even with nine or 10 men, the team is ready to suffer, to counter, to hurt the opponent. We're going to play with our weapons."

Despite finishing the game with nine players, PSG comfortably won the expected goals battle, creating 2.0 xG to Bayern's 0.6.

The European champions have now won five consecutive knockout matches in major international competitions, the longest such run in their history.

Luis Enrique said: "I'm proud. We were up to the task, and we deserved to win this difficult match. Bayern are a good team.

"We are a team that wants to play football, even when you have to defend with a player down. The end of the match was very difficult. Bayern played a very good game; they could have won."

The match was overshadowed by a serious leg injury to Bayern star Jamal Musiala, who was carried off in clear distress following a collision with Gianluigi Donnarumma.

In his own post-match interview with DAZN, full-back Achraf Hakimi said: "I would like to say a word for Jamal Musiala.

"I feel like it's a very important injury for him, and I give him my full support. I hope he will be back on the pitch soon."
