Giulia Gwinn will miss the rest of Euro 2025 after suffering a medial cruciate ligament (MCL) injury in Germany's opening match of the tournament.

Eight-time European champions Germany beat Poland 2-0 on Friday, with Jule Brand and Lea Schuller on target in the second half.

Yet their victory was marred by the loss of Gwinn, who was forced off in the 40th minute, having appeared to twist her leg while blocking an Ewa Pajor attempt.

Gwinn underwent scans on Saturday, and it has now been confirmed the 26-year-old will miss the rest of the tournament.

A statement from the DFB read: "Our captain sustained a medial ligament injury in her left knee during yesterday's game against Poland. The expected recovery time is several weeks."

Gwinn will now return to her club, Bayern Munich, for treatment, though is expected to re-join the Germany squad to offer support to her team-mates.

Germany face Denmark in their next group game, before taking on Sweden.

Gwinn, who was named Germany's captain in February, missed the 2023 World Cup with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

Runners-up to England in 2022, Germany have appeared in 69% of the Euro finals in history (9/13), though the last edition was the first time they had lost one.

Indeed, Germany have played (47) and won (37) the most games at the Euros.
