Manchester United 2-1 Atletico Madrid: Mbeumo brace completes comeback

Manchester United put together back-to-back pre-season victories as Bryan Mbeumo's second-half double completed a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid.

Arnau Ortiz gave Atletico an early lead, but Mbeumo got his pre-season goal tally up and running ahead of United's mouthwatering clash with Paris Saint-Germain next week.

Diego Simeone's side needed just five minutes to open the scoring at Strawberry Arena when Ortiz's teasing delivery from the left-hand side evaded a touch from Carlos Martin and Jorge Dominguez before nestling into the bottom-right corner.

United dominated the first half from then on, and almost drew level five minutes later through Luke Shaw, but his stinging volley was tipped over by Jan Oblak.

Oblak then somehow managed to keep Amad Diallo's deflected free-kick out with his right leg before Mbeumo flicked a header narrowly wide of the far post after good work from teenager Shea Lacey.

But United's perseverance was rewarded eight minutes after the restart when Lacey was tripped inside the penalty area by Jorge Castillo, with Mbeumo stepping up to send substitute goalkeeper Salvi Esquivel the wrong way from 12 yards.

Arnau Sola then forced Tom Heaton into a smart stop down low, and that intervention proved pivotal as, just two minutes later, Rodrigo Mendoza's loose pass was intercepted by Jack Fletcher, who crossed for Mbeumo to finish from close range.

Atletico twice came close to finding an equaliser in quick succession late on, with Morten Hjulmand's shot striking the left post before Mendoza's header struck the opposite upright as United held on.

Mbeumo makes United's dominance count as Mount continues to impress

United did need the frame of the goal to get themselves over the line late on, but this was a dominant display overall.

Following a resounding 5-0 win over Rosenborg last time out, in which the Red Devils' emerging talents took centre stage, it was one of their more experienced players in Mbeumo who proved to be the difference.

Mbeumo finished with team-high totals for shots (three) and will be hoping to build on an encouraging debut season at Old Trafford. His 15 goal involvements (12 goals, three assists) across all competitions in 2025-26 was only bettered by captain Bruno Fernandes (31).

But Mount also impressed in midfield and continues to put his name forward for a starting spot when the Premier League campaign rolls around, despite the summer acquisitions of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. He led all United players in chances created (three) and passes in the final third (21).

Michael Carrick will be pleased with how this match played out, albeit against an Atletico team missing some of their big names. United finished with an expected goals (xG) total of 1.82 from their 13 shots to their opponents' 0.64 from three fewer attempts.
