Victor Wembanyama admitted he "cares deeply" about being named the NBA's MVP after strengthening his case with Wednesday's 41-point showing against the Golden State Warriors.

The San Antonio Spurs extended their winning streak to 10 games with a runaway 127-113 success against the Warriors, who were again without Stephen Curry due to injury.

The Spurs are now 58-18 for the season, having won 15 of their last 16 games, and they are chasing the 60-16 Oklahoma City Thunder for top spot in the West.

But Wembanyama is also targeting individual honours, having put up 41 points for the second straight game, as well as adding 18 rebounds.

Wembanyama is locked in a battle to win the NBA's top individual prize, with Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander viewed as his closest rival.

And the Frenchman did not play down the importance of the award when speaking to ESPN after Wednesday's game, saying: "I do care deeply about it.

"I think that the greats that are in the Hall of Fame – or the best of all time – have fought and grabbed everything they could grab early on in their career.

"If I want to make my spot among the greats, I've got to not miss any occasion to put my name up there."

Wembanyama was 16 for 22 from the field as he put up his fourth 40-point performance of the season, while he also blocked three shots at the other end.

Golden State head coach Steve Kerr was at a loss when it came to stopping the 22-year-old, saying: "He's got unbelievable confidence now.

"He looks like he knows exactly what to do on both ends. In his first couple of years, he looked young at times. He doesn't look young any more. He just looks like he knows exactly what he's doing.

"He dominated the glass. There are plays where you can't do anything. Several lobs where it looked like a Nerf hoop. He's brilliant."

Wembanyama is in action again on Thursday as the Spurs visit the Los Angeles Clippers, with another road game – versus the Denver Nuggets – pencilled in for Saturday.
