Toluca thrashed Los Angeles FC 4-0 to claim their place in the Champions Cup final, with Paulinho scoring a late double.

LAFC won the first leg 2-1 in California last week, and would have been confident of edging out the Liga MX leaders to set up a showdown with Tigres UANL.

Instead, LAFC were soundly beaten and reduced to 10 men at Estadio Nemesio Diez, as Toluca sealed a 5-2 aggregate win.

Toluca piled on the pressure from the off, unleashing 18 shots in the first half, to no avail.

However, the pressure told early in the second half when Helinho tucked away a penalty after he was fouled by Ryan Hollingshead.

Everardo Lopez extended Toluca's advantage with a screamer in the 58th minute.

Ryan Porteous received his marching orders in the 87th minute, paving the way for Paulinho to add gloss to Toluca's emphatic triumph with a stoppage-time double, with both of his goals teed up by Pavel Perez.

Data Debrief: Tillman's shocking miss proves costly

Matters may well have been different had LAFC's Timothy Tillman not missed a golden chance early on.

Denis Bouanga saw his effort saved by Luis Garcia, but with an open goal at his mercy on the rebound, Tillman skewed over the bar. That chance alone was worth 0.72 expected goals (xG).

LAFC created 1.25 xG overall, from only five attempts, but Tillman's was by far the biggest opportunity.

Toluca, meanwhile, finished with 31 shots and 3.82 xG, with Hugo Lloris having to make a whopping 11 saves.

The final is set for May 30, with the winner taking a place in the 2029 Club World Cup, as well as next season's Intercontinental Cup.
