The Numbers Game: Rampant England aim to finish strong

18h19 CEST

05/10/2026

England round off the first international break of the season, aiming to make it three straight wins in the Nations League.

After starting their campaign with a 3-2 loss to world champions Spain at Wembley, England beat Czechia 2-0 and then thrashed Croatia 7-0.

Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka scored twice each, while Jude Bellingham was also on target and laid on three assists. Anthony Gordon and Morgan Rogers also scored in the emphatic victory.

Thomas Tuchel has seen his team plunder 11 goals in the three games across this extended international window so far, and there is one more match to come, as Czechia visit Wembley on Tuesday.

This fixture comes just a week on from a routine win in Prague, where the Three Lions were helped out by Pavel Sulc's red card midway through the first half.

Here, we preview England v Czechia, calling on Opta's key insights.

What's expected?

The Opta supercomputer is making England the clear favourites, with a 79.8% win probability.

Czechia come out on top in just 7.9% of the model's 10,000 data-led simulations, while there is a 12.3% chance of a draw.

And given the head-to-head record between these teams, it is hardly surprising to see England so well fancied.

Czechia have lost six of their eight competitive meetings with England (W2), though they have always responded to back-to-back losses with a win – they have lost their last two.

England are also unbeaten in all eight of their games against Czechia at Wembley (W6 D2), the most recent of which saw the Three Lions finish their Euro 2020 group-stage campaign with a 1-0 win.

The Three Lions have not lost back-to-back competitive home matches between November 1999 (v Scotland) and October 2000 (v Germany).

Tuchel's team showing their teeth

There was so much frustration among England's fanbase in the wake of Tuchel's pragmatic, perhaps pessimistic, approach during the World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, as there was a real feeling that this Three Lions squad has the attacking talent to cut through most other teams.

That attacking quality has been on show over the past fortnight, and Tuchel will be eyeing up a strong finish to this extended stint with his squad.

Across their last four games in all competitions, England have won 6-4 against France and 7-0 against Croatia. It is the first time they have scored 6+ goals in two different games in a calendar year since 2019, while they last did so in three different games in 1908.

And while Kane remains England's talisman up top, there is a plethora of talent behind the Bayern Munich captain who are proving the Three Lions should always be out to stamp their authority on matches.

Gordon has scored in each of his last four appearances for England. The last player other than Kane to score in five in a row for the team was Wayne Rooney between October 2014 and March 2015.

The Barcelona winger has actually netted two headed goals in his last two England appearances – across 248 total club appearances, he has not scored a single header.

Other than Kane, Gordon is the only player to be directly involved in a goal in five consecutive England appearances across the last 10 years (four goals, two assists).

Against Croatia, Saka scored two right-footed goals in a match for the first time in his senior career for club and country.

Bellingham, meanwhile, was directly involved in more than two goals in an England game for the first time. He is the first player to record three assists in a game for the Three Lions since Trent Alexander-Arnold against San Marino in November 2021.

England have lost Alex Scott, who faces up to two months on the sidelines, and Ezri Konsa due to injury, with Rico Lewis called up, but their attack is fit and firing.

Czechia's dismal start

But what of Czechia?

They sit bottom of the group after losing their opening three games, going down 3-1 to Spain and 2-1 to Croatia, either side of that defeat to England.

Santi Denia has lost all three of his games in charge of Czechia and could be the second manager to lose their first four matches with the nation after Vaclav Jezek in 1973, then as Czechoslovakia.

In fact, Czechia have lost five of their last six games in all competitions (D1), including each of the last four in a row. They last lost five consecutively between July 1972 and March 1973.

Across all of the teams competing in the 2026-27 Nations League, Czechia's 1.73 expected goals is the sixth-lowest. They have had just 16 shots, with only Gibraltar (14) and Liechtenstein (nine) having fewer attempts in the competition.

Only six teams, meanwhile, have conceded more goals than Czechia (seven) so far.

Czechia have already faced 56 shots – an average of 18.7 per game – with 22 of those hitting the target.

This is a team that are not clinical going forward and are open at the back. England, at home, should not be having any trouble.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

England – Harry Kane

If Kane features in this match, he will make his 125th England appearance, which would see him equal Peter Shilton as the all-time most capped player in the Three Lions' history.

With his double last time out, Kane became the first player to score 10+ goals in three different calendar years for England: 11 in 2026, 16 in 2021 and 12 in 2019.

Kane has netted 89 goals across his 124 caps to date, and a flurry here could well set him on the way to really close in on a century before 2026 is up. At the very least, he should be targeting making this calendar year his best for a goal return on the international stage.

Czechia – Adam Hlozek

Given their drab form, Czechia hardly have many players who are shining in an attacking sense.

But Hlozek has been one of their better performers.

He leads the way in their squad in the past three games for goal involvements (two assists), shots (four) and chances created (four).

England's defence should not have too much to worry about, but Hlozek could pose them a few problems if given the chance.
