The San Antonio Spurs and superstar center Victor Wembanyama agreed to a five-year, $252 million maximum rookie-scale contract extension on Friday, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
According to Charania, Wembanyama decided on the 25 percent maximum instead of the 30 percent supermax escalators to $303 million, after he and the Spurs went through multiple frameworks. The French superstar ultimately chose a contract rooted in giving him and the organisation increased ability to build a sustained title contender around him.
The 22-year-old was scheduled for restricted free agency after the 2026-27 season on his previous deal.
Wembanyama has become one of the faces of the NBA quickly after the Spurs drafted him first overall in 2023. He won Rookie of the Year and was an All-Defensive First-Team selection who led the NBA with 3.6 blocks per game in his first season.
After averaging 21.3 points and 10.6 rebounds as a rookie, Wembanyama increased those totals to 24.3 and 11.0 in 2024-25 and improved again last season, scoring 25.0 per game and grabbing 11.5 boards.
That was part of a brilliant season for Wembanyama, who won Defensive Player of the Year and made his second All-Star team. He shot 51.2 percent from the field and 34.9 percent from 3-point range.
He had 42 games with 10 or more rebounds, 42 double-doubles and one triple-double, including the fastest double-double in NBA history on March, when he had 10 points and 10 rebounds in 8:31 against the Chicago Bulls.
Wembanyama made the playoffs this past season for the first time and led the Spurs to the NBA Finals. While they lost to the New York Knicks, there is little doubt that the Spurs, who are loaded with young talent, will be a title contender for years to come.
