South Africa recovered from a slow start to beat New Zealand 29-24 in the third Test of their 'Greatest Rivalry' series.

The Springboks overturned a 12-5 deficit to move 2-1 ahead in the four-match series, which concludes in Baltimore next weekend.

New Zealand made the brighter start, scoring first through Ardie Savea in the 11th minute after Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu had been sent to the sin bin. 

When he returned, South Africa responded with Kurt-Lee Arendse going over in the corner, but Savea's second try of the game restored the All Blacks' seven-point advantage.

Yet when Savea was forced off injured and Ruben Love was sent to the bin, the Springboks levelled when they were awarded a penalty try just before half-time.

Despite a missed Love penalty, New Zealand regained their lead in the 55th minute when Will Jordan gathered after his own initial punt and darted for the line.

However, South Africa snatched the lead for the first time through Jesse Kriel two minutes later, while Malcolm Marx went under the posts to give them breathing space.

Samisoni Taukei'aho crossed at the death for the All Blacks, but they can now only tie the series in next week's finale.

Springboks surge back to move to the brink of victory

It is advantage South Africa, with the Springboks now guaranteed at least half of the magnetised trophy on offer in this series.

The Springboks had lost their last two meetings with New Zealand at the FNB Stadium – most recently in 2012 – and they were a little slow out of the blocks. 

Rassie Erasmus' side were immediately punished after Feinberg-Mngomezulu was sent to the bin for a deliberate knock-on.

Nevertheless, they did well to stand their ground while a man light, and prevent New Zealand from building on their early lead.

The hosts subsequently took advantage following the injury to Savea, which seemed to take the wind out of the All Blacks' sails, and got themselves level before half-time.

South Africa's victory was already in the bag by the time Taukei'aho went over with the final action. They now effectively have a free hit when they travel to Baltimore for the final Test next Saturday.
