Six Nations: Prendergast left out of Ireland squad for England clash

Sam Prendergast has been left out of Ireland's squad to face England in the Six Nations on Saturday.

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell has made five changes to his squad that narrowly defeated Italy last weekend, with Prendergast not even named on the replacements.

After a heavy defeat to holders France in the tournament opener, Ireland bounced back with that 20-13 victory over Italy at Aviva Stadium.

Ireland have won four of their last five meetings with England in the men’s Six Nations (L1), however England’s solitary victory in that run came the last time the sides met at the Allianz Stadium.

Ireland have also won on five occasions away to England in the men’s Six Nations (L8), just one fewer than every other team combined (France, Scotland and Wales twice each).

Jack Crowley will start at fly-half, with Jamison Gibson-Park, Tadhg Furlong, Tadhg Beirne and Josh van der Flier all coming into the starting lineup.

When asked about Prendergast's absence, Farrell said: "Everyone gets feedback, we talk it through and use it in the right manner and see where we are going to go in the not too distance future. It is the same for everyone.

"Sam's a fantastic international player and he's on a journey and is learning and that will never stop. That is the same for Ciaran Frawley. We have talked all along about the four lads competing with each other and the balance is right for the team this weekend.

"As always there are a few different reasons that get put together but the main point to get out of selection is what is the right balance for us in terms of where we are at and who we are playing against.

"A few lads promoted from the bench, a bit fresher and a few lads who haven't played coming into the squad which has freshened things up and different combinations."
