Six Nations: Edwards hails France's resilience in 'crazy England game'

France defence coach Shaun Edwards was thrilled to come out on top in "another crazy game" in the Six Nations, as a win over England secured the title.

Ireland had put the pressure on France after a thumping victory over Scotland early on Saturday sent them top of the table.

However, France knew a win would be enough to lift the trophy for a second consecutive year, and they secured it in dramatic fashion, as Thomas Ramos' last-gasp penalty earned them a thrilling 48-46 win over England.

It is France's eighth title since the Five Nations became the Six Nations when Italy joined in 2000, more than any other team in that time.

Out of 405 matches in Six Nations history, only two have seen both teams score 40+ points, with both occurring in France's final two games of the 2026 tournament against Scotland (50-40) and England.

France were spearheaded by Louis Bielle-Barry, who scored four of the 13 tries in a big scoring match at Stade de France, and though Edwards was frustrated by the openness, he could not deny that it was a spectacle.

"We had to dig in. We have very talented players and amazing athletes, but they also love the game. It gives them that edge," he told ITV. "I had a feeling the goal kicking would be the difference.

"Another crazy game, a great one for the fans. Rugby at the moment, particularly in the Six Nations, is just phenomenal.

"England have an excellent defensive system and conceded more than us. [Shipping points] is frustrating at times, but it's the way rugby is going.

"If it was just your team conceding lots of points, you would be worried. Look at the scores all around the world; it's a regular occurrence nowadays.

"It's a group we are building; they can improve in the future."

England, meanwhile, endured their worst-ever Six Nations performance, losing four games in a single championship for the first time and ultimately finishing fifth.

However, they undoubtedly finished with their strongest performance and had looked set to secure the victory thanks to Tommy Freeman's late try, until France turned the tide.

"Firstly, we should congratulate France. They are a tremendous team, they've done so well, and it was an excellent game," Steve Borthwick told ITV.

"They are formidable opponents. Huge congratulations to France, [head coach] Fabien [Galthie] and all their team.

"It has taken time to get the relationships within the team; we work those aspects together.

"We are bitterly disappointed with the last few weeks, and we wanted to get a great result for our supporters. We're disappointed that we didn't get a result for them, but I hope they can be proud of how the team played.

"We wanted to achieve much more in this championship than what we have done."
