Brendan Rodgers has resigned as Celtic manager following a below-par start to the campaign.

Rodgers' second stint in charge of the Scottish giants came to an end on Monday, with the club confirming the former Liverpool boss had stepped down.

The Northern Irishman's resignation comes after Celtic lost 3-1 to Hearts on Sunday to fall eight points behind the pacesetters in the Scottish Championship.

Celtic also failed to qualify for the Champions League this season, while they have collected just four points from their opening three Europa League fixtures.

Having won the Scottish Premiership title twice during his first spell in charge in Glasgow, Rodgers returned to Celtic in 2023 after leaving Leicester City.

He guided Celtic to back-to-back league crowns, as well as winning the Scottish Cup in 2023-24 and the Scottish League Cup last season.

"Brendan leaves Celtic with our thanks for the role he has played during a period of continued success for the club and we wish him further success in the future," a club statement read.

"The process to appoint a new permanent manager is underway and the club will update supporters further on this as soon as possible."

In the interim, Celtic have confirmed that former manager Martin O'Neill will return to take charge of the first team, with Shaun Maloney acting as his assistant.

Rodgers took charge of 85 league matches during his second stint in charge at Celtic, winning 63 times (74.1%) and averaging 2.4 points per game.

His resignation comes two days before a clash with Falkirk, before Celtic then gear up for a derby against fierce rivals Rangers on Sunday.
