Golden State Warriors guard Moses Moody has been diagnosed with a torn patellar tendon in his left knee and will not play again this season, multiple media outlets reported on Tuesday.
Moody sustained the injury late in Monday’s 137-131 overtime win over the Dallas Mavericks on a non-contact play.
With just over a minute remaining in overtime, Moody stole the ball from Dallas’ Cooper Flagg and jogged uncontested toward what should have been an easy dunk and an exclamation point on the victory.
Instead, Moody’s left knee buckled as he attempted to jump, and he crumpled to the floor, wincing in pain and grabbing his knee immediately.
The television broadcast briefly showed a somewhat graphic image of Moody’s kneecap seemingly out of place.
He was carried off on a stretcher and had X-rays taken while in the arena.
After the game, a sombre Steve Kerr told reporters, “We don’t know what it is, but it sure looked bad.”
Kerr also mentioned the misfortune of Moody suffering a seemingly random injury in his first game back from rehabilitating a wrist issue.
Several of Moody’s teammates were visibly shaken when the injury occurred, but Gary Payton II said after the game that Moody was “in good spirits” despite the injury.
The 14th overall draft pick in 2021, Moody was having the best season of his career through 60 games played. This season, he posted career highs of 25.7 minutes per game, 12.1 points per game and 40.1% shooting from 3-point range.
The injury is the latest in a star-crossed season for the Warriors, who lost Jimmy Butler to a torn ACL in January and have had to play almost half their season without Stephen Curry because of a lingering knee issue.
