Herve Renard has left his role as Tunisia head coach after just 18 days at the helm, having failed to prevent their early World Cup exit after joining mid-tournament.

Renard, a veteran of the international game who led both Zambia (in 2012) and Ivory Coast (2015) to Africa Cup of Nations glory, took charge on June 16.

His arrival came in the aftermath of a chastening 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening Group F game, with Sabri Lamouchi being dismissed.

Lamouchi became the first manager to ever be sacked one game into a World Cup campaign, having himself only been appointed in January, following Sami Trabelsi's departure.   

Renard's appointment failed to have the desired impact as Tunisia went out with a whimper, losing 4-0 to Japan and 3-1 to the Netherlands under his watch.

Tunisia's 12 goals conceded in the group stage were the most by a team at any edition of the World Cup since North Korea in 2010 (also 12) and the most by any side at the tournament outright since Brazil in 2014 (14 in seven games).

Having initially said there was an option for his stint to be extended beyond the end of the World Cup, Renard has now confirmed his departure.

"My journey comes to an end," Renard wrote on his Instagram story on Saturday. 

"Before I leave, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the FTF for giving me the opportunity to participate in the World Cup. 

"It was an honour to wear Tunisia's colours and to live this unforgettable experience."

Renard's departure has yet to be announced by the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF), but the Eagles of Carthage will now be seeking their eighth head coach since the start of 2024.
