One week after heading back to Toronto in a trade that was held up for nearly three months due to an NBA investigation of the Los Angeles Clippers, seven-time All-Star Kawhi Leonard and the Raptors have agreed to terms on a two-year, $115million contract extension.

The deal includes a player option for the 2028-29 season.

Los Angeles and Toronto agreed to a deal on June 30 that sent Leonard to the Raptors in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two first-round draft picks, two second-round selections and a pick swap.

The trade, though, was held up while the NBA investigated the Clippers and Leonard for potential salary cap circumvention after the two-time Finals MVP received $28million in endorsements from Aspiration, a company with ties to team owner Steve Ballmer.

The NBA came down hard on Los Angeles on September 9, suspending Ballmer for one year, fining the team $30million and forcing the Clippers to forfeit five first-round draft picks.

Leonard was hit with a $700,000 penalty, president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank was banned for six months and team president of business operations Gillian Zucker was suspended for one year.

The Clippers will give up one first-round pick in each draft from 2029 to 2033.

Toronto and Los Angeles completed the trade five days after the NBA announced the penalties.

Leonard, 35, led the Raptors to their only NBA title in 2019 in his only season with Toronto before signing with the Clippers.

He is coming off a season in which he averaged a career-high 27.9 points to go along with 6.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists while shooting 50.5 per cent in 65 games.
