Ange Postecoglou labelled Tottenham's season as "outstanding", despite following their Europa League glory with a humbling home defeat to Brighton.

Spurs were thumped 4-1 by Fabian Hurzeler's side on the final day, the loss cutting short celebrations after Brennan Johnson helped them to European success against Manchester United on Wednesday.

Dominic Solanke's 17th-minute penalty edged Postecoglou's hosts ahead, only for Hinshelwood to score a brilliant double early into the second half.

A Matt O'Riley spot-kick and a thumping Diego Gomez finish then wrapped up the win for Brighton, who missed out on Conference League qualification after Chelsea's 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest.

Postecoglou lavished praise on his side despite the disappointment on Sunday, pointing to Spurs winning their first trophy since 2008.

Asked how he would assess the season on BBC's Match of the Day, the Tottenham boss said: "Outstanding! We won a trophy, which we have not done for 17 years, and we're in the Champions League.

"Ask any supporter at the start of the season if they'd take that and there wouldn't be a person in the house that wouldn't."

Tottenham lost 26 games in all competitions this season, their most in a single campaign in the club’s history, and it leaves questions over Postecoglou's future.

They also became the first side in top-flight history to lose 22 games in a 38-game season and not be relegated, ending the 2024-25 campaign in 17th.

"It doesn't bother me asking me about my future," Postecoglou added. "I can't answer. I'm pretty relaxed about it. It's been an unbelievable season. I couldn't be any prouder."

Spurs' 22 Premier League defeats this campaign matched an unwanted low, only losing as many matches in the 1934-35 season when they finished bottom of the top division.

They also shipped 65 goals in the competition, only further adding to speculation that Postecoglou's job could be in danger for next season.

"You're asking the wrong person," the Australian pushed back after further questioning on his future.

"Everyone in the media is intelligent enough to know I'm not the person to ask those questions. I'll have a break and then hopefully we'll be back first day next season to start things."
