The Detroit Pistons and forward Ausar Thompson have agreed to a five-year, $155 million rookie-scale extension, according to reports.

The extension follows a career season for Thompson, who finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting last season and made the All-Defensive first team.

He was a key contributor to the Pistons’ 60-22 season, averaging 9.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, an NBA-best 2.0 steals and 0.9 blocks in 73 regular-season games.

Thompson is one of three players (Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic) with at least 300 steals and 150 blocks since entering the league as the No. 5 pick in the 2023 draft.

The 23-year-old Thompson will earn $11.12 million this season in the final year of his rookie scale contract, while his extension, which begins in2027-28, is reportedly worth $31 million annually.

Among the top perimeter defenders in the NBA with a unique combination of size, strength, athleticism and skill, Thompson is, however, a non-shooter, converting just 20.4 percent of his 3-pointers and 60 percent of his free throws.                                                                                                                     

Thompson and his twin, Amen Thompson of the Houston Rockets, are now the first brothers to each receive a $100 million NBA deal. Amen Thompson signed a five-year, $208 million rookie extension with the Rockets recently, giving both a combined $363 million this offseason.
