The New Orleans Pelicans have found their next head coach.
Former Orlando Magic coach Jamahl Mosley has been hired to be the Pelicans’ leader on the sidelines, the franchise announced on Monday.
Mosley’s deal is for five years, according to multiple media outlets.
Mosley was fired by Orlando on May 4 after three consecutive first-round playoff exits.
In five seasons with the Magic, Mosley was 189-221. Orlando was consistently among the NBA’s best defensive teams under his leadership, but the offence failed to live up to expectations with star forwards Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner on the roster.
The Pelicans fired coach Willie Green after the team started 2-10 in his fifth season, handing the reins to James Borrego as the interim coach.
Many had considered Borrego a serious candidate for the head coaching role going forward after New Orleans showed some signs of growth during their 24-46 finish to the season, which included a 12-6 stretch in February and March.
New Orleans’ front office of Troy Weaver and Joe Dumars are tasked with rebuilding a team that won under 30 games in both of the last two seasons after a playoff appearance in 2024.
The Pelicans do not have a first-round pick in this year's draft after trading it to the Atlanta Hawks last year to draft Derik Queen.
Queen and Jeremiah Fears both had solid rookie seasons but appeared to fade down the stretch.
Zion Williamson has two years and $89million remaining on his contract but is extension-eligible this offseason, giving the front office another tough decision.
