Alfonso Pedraza's own goal saw Lazio's winning run in Serie A come to a halt as they drew 1-1 with Napoli.
Lazio went into Sunday's contest looking to extend a six-game winning streak in the top flight, while also knowing that a point would be enough to see them top the standings heading into the international break.
And all three points seemed within Lazio's grasp when Davide Frattesi hammered in at the culmination of a rapid counter-attack in the 28th minute.
Napoli squandered a huge chance to equalise just before half-time, when Mathias Olivera's cutback was pushed by Lazio goalkeeper Christos Mandas onto the foot of Rasmus Hojlund, who was unable to tuck home an open net from point-blank range.
Yet Napoli's luck turned three minutes into the second half when Noa Lang's cross to the back post was turned in by the unfortunate Pedraza, who had just come on as a half-time substitute.
McTominay went close to putting Napoli ahead soon after, but Pedraza was equal to the midfielder's strike.
Kevin De Bruyne then had a massive opportunity when he rushed through one-on-one. Mandas made the save, but the Napoli playmaker managed to skew the rebound goalwards; Diogo Leite, however, got back to clear acrobatically off the line.
McTominay tried his luck with an ambitious overhead kick late on, but neither team could find a winner.

Club record up for Lazio
While Gennaro Gattuso will no doubt have wanted to get one over on his former club, the Lazio boss must reflect on what has been a superb start to the season for his team.
They have reached 29 points after 11 games, setting a new club record in the top flight, surpassing the 28 points they obtained in the 2017-18 campaign.
Lazio are also unbeaten in Serie A this term. The only previous time they went unbeaten across their first 11 top-flight matches was in the 1972-73 season (W6 D5).
The visitors made a bright start, having five shots in the opening 10 minutes, something they had not done in a Serie A match since 12th April 2024 against Salernitana.
However, Massimiliano Allegri will feel Napoli were more than worthy of a point. They reacted well to going behind and finished with 2.35 expected goals to Lazio's 0.86 xG.
That being said, 0.96 of Napoli's xG came from Hojlund's missed opportunity, albeit Lazio goalkeeper Mandas possibly just did enough to make the chance more difficult.
It is just one win in five for Napoli, though, and they go into the international break entrenched in mid-table.
