Maguire: Man Utd 'need more bodies' ahead of Champions League return

Harry Maguire has conceded that Manchester United "need more bodies" as they prepare for life back in the Champions League next season.

Maguire was a key part of the Red Devils' revival under Michael Carrick, who replaced Ruben Amorim back in January after a poor run of form across all competitions.

During Carrick's time in charge, United won more games (12) and scored more goals (33) than any other side in the Premier League, which confirmed third spot in the table.

United's upturn in form also resulted in Carrick landing the head coach position until 2028, though Maguire believes more additions to the squad are needed to succeed.

The Red Devils are reportedly close to sealing a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, while Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

United's impressive end-of-season form was criticised, however, given they had exited early on from the EFL Cup and FA Cup, with the Premier League their only priority.

Among Premier League teams in 2025-26, United played the joint-fewest matches (40) in all competitions, and Maguire believes new faces are needed to maintain their momentum.

Discussing what's changed under Carrick since Amorim's exit, Maguire told the Rest is Football podcast: "We had a great end to the season and finished where we aimed for at the start of the season.

"I know the club wants to win titles, but to have been 15th and losing the Europa League final, I think everyone thought it was so poor that we'd find it tough to bounce back, but the points difference was massive.

"But this is not where we stop, we need to kick on and challenge for the big titles. I think everyone can see results speak for themselves when Michael came in.

"We weren't in a bad position when Ruben was there, we were set nicely, but we know we could've been better. Since Michael, we've managed to finish third quite comfortably.

"But loads of improvements are needed. We need more bodies now we're in the Champions League, we know it'll be a lot tougher playing two, three times a week."

It was also reported on Monday that former United boss Amorim is close to replacing Massimiliano Allegri in becoming AC Milan's new boss.
