Daniel Farke has backed James Maddison to play an important part in Tottenham's final two games of the Premier League season.

Maddison played under Farke at Norwich City before moving to Leicester City, and then eventually to Spurs.

The English playmaker made his first appearance of the season against Farke's Leeds United on Monday, coming off the bench as Spurs were held to a 1-1 draw at home.

Maddison suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during pre-season, which came off the back of another knee injury towards the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

Only Dominic Solanke (24) directly contributed to more goals for Spurs last season than Maddison (22 – 10 goals, 12 assists).

The 29-year-old also scored three goals and provided three assists during Spurs' successful Europa League campaign, which ended a 17-year trophy drought.

The north London side now find themselves in a relegation battle, with Roberto De Zerbi's side two points above the drop zone with two games to go.

Farke, however, believes Maddison will help Spurs in their matches against Chelsea and Everton.

"I have a soft spot for James Maddison. He was my player when he was pretty young," said Farke.

"If you love football, then you love James Maddison because he is a pure baller. For me, he is one of the most creative, gifted and talented midfield players in England.

"You feel [sorry] when such a great footballer and even better human being is out for such a long time, but I was just delighted to see him back in the last matchday squads.

"It's always good when you have an option like James Maddison. I'm pretty sure he will and can play an important part in the run-in."
