Dominic Calvert-Lewin once again troubled Newcastle United as he led the way in Leeds United's rampant 4-1 victory at Elland Road.

Calvert-Lewin thought he had scored twice on Monday, as Leeds maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier League season and surged into third place.

However, the striker saw what he thought was the first of a double taken off him, after Jayden Bogle was adjudged to get the final touch, as Daniel Farke's team made a statement of intent.

Leeds were scintillating from the off. Newcastle's Matias Fernandez-Pardo was perhaps fortunate not to concede a penalty for handball early on, and though James Trafford almost gifted Yoane Wissa a goal, the visitors were unable to deal with the Whites' intensity.

Calvert-Lewin inadvertently blocked a goalbound Ethan Ampadu strike, while Bogle was twice denied by Lukas Hornicek.

Those saves came either side of Newcastle losing Nico Gonzalez to concussion, and without the midfielder, Matthias Jaissle's team were cut open far too easily.

Leeds' pressure told when the unfortunate Lewis Miley diverted in Ao Tanaka's strike in the 32nd minute, and just 162 seconds later, the hosts were 2-0 up as Calvert-Lewin's header from James Justin's cross deflected in off Bogle.

There was no doubt about the scorer of Leeds' third goal, as Calvert-Lewin got the better of Sven Botman and finished coolly on the cusp of half-time.

Anton Stach squandered a brilliant chance shortly after the restart, but Noah Okafor made no mistake with a sublime strike in the 59th minute.

Joe Willock hit the crossbar, but Newcastle did get a consolation goal in the 90th minute, when Bazoumana Toure opened his Premier League account.

Leeds' number nine looked gutted when he found out his first goal had been given to Bogle, but he nevertheless ran Newcastle ragged.

Calvert-Lewin has scored in each of his last five Premier League appearances at Elland Road.

He is just the second Leeds player to do so, after Mark Viduka, who went on to play for Newcastle, between March and August 2003 (six in a row).

Newcastle may be under new management and with plenty of new faces, but that did not stop Calvert-Lewin from continuing his exceptional record against the Magpies.

The former Everton forward has now scored eight Premier League goals in 18 games against Newcastle, more than he has managed against any other team in the competition. His tally of 11 goal involvements against the Magpies is three more than he has registered against any other team, too.

As good as Leeds were, though, this is perhaps a performance that had been coming for Newcastle, who, despite being unbeaten coming into MD4, headed into it having faced more shots than any other side in the Premier League this season (61), averaging 20.3 per game. 

Newcastle shipped 15 shots in this defeat, but maybe their luck ran out, as this was the earliest that Newcastle have conceded four Premier League goals since December 2019 v Manchester United.
