The supporting cast around Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves will look very different in Los Angeles next season.
One day after LeBron James announced that he will not be returning to the Lakers, the team made a series of moves on Wednesday, according to multiple media outlets, including a trade with the Utah Jazz for center Walker Kessler.
The Lakers traded two first-round draft picks and two first-round pick swaps to the Jazz for Kessler and agreed to extend the 7-foot-2 center for four years and $130million, according to multiple reports.
Kessler was due to be a restricted free agent and reportedly had difficulty in negotiating a new contract in Utah.
A first-round pick in 2022, Kessler will provide much-needed size and rim protection on defence and gives Dončić a viable lob threat in the pick-and-roll game.
Kessler was limited to just five games last season due to a shoulder injury, but he briefly debuted a new willingness to shoot from 3-point range, making 6 of his 8 attempts from beyond the arc.
Over 201 career games, he has averaged 9.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.36 blocked shots while shooting 68.1% from the field.

The Lakers also made three more additions in the free agency market, signing big man Sandro Mamukelashvili, swingman Quentin Grimes and point guard Collin Sexton, who played alongside Kessler in Utah.
Mamukelashvili reportedly signed for four years and $52million, coming off a breakout season with the Raptors during which he averaged 11.2 points while shooting 38.9% from 3-point range.
Grimes’ reported deal is for four years and $60million, and the Lakers will be counting on him for shooting and secondary ball-handling.
Grimes scored 13.4 points per game last season with the 76ers, while his 3-point efficiency dropped to 33.4%. In 2024-25, he shot 38.5% from beyond the arc.
Sexton reportedly signed for $19million over two seasons, giving Los Angeles an experienced ball-handler off the bench who is a career 38.9% 3-point shooter.
In three seasons in Utah together, Sexton assisted on 92 baskets made by Kessler, more than any other passer on the team.
The Lakers are hoping to build a contending-level roster around Dončić, who is now out from under James’ shadow.
Los Angeles began the offseason by agreeing with Reaves to a four-year contract extension worth up to $184.8million, the largest contract signed by an undrafted player in NBA history.
