'I messed up' – Wembanyama takes blame for Spurs' Game 2 loss

Victor Wembanyama shouldered the blame for the San Antonio Spurs' narrow loss to the New York Knicks in Game 2 of the NBA Finals.

The Knicks head back home with a 2-0 lead in the series after a 105-104 victory over the Spurs on Friday.

It was a topsy-turvy affair, with both teams holding the lead at certain points, but there was late drama with the score level at 104-104 with 12.7 seconds left.

However, Wembanyama played an errant pass to Stephon Castle and fouled Jalen Brunson in his attempt to make amends. Brunson then sank the game-winning free throw.

The Frenchman had a late chance to grab a win, but his 20-footer hit the back of the rim, leaving the Spurs with a deficit to overturn if they want to lift the trophy.

"That's the most frustrating thing: to throw it away after putting in all this work," Wembanyama said.

"I threw that one away. I messed up. It's like the body reacts quicker than the mind.

"We needed to win that game. This game was ours. But at this point, it's done.

"Am I going to regret it? Yes, of course. Am I going to use that to fuel me and fuel us to the next game? Absolutely.

"That's the whole problem. I need to have more poise, more control of the game. I'm not going to go through the whole [three] possessions, but that's the general image.

"We need to put ourselves in better conditions. We're digging ourselves a hole. That's been the theme so far."

Wembanyama still led San Antonio with 29 points, nine rebounds and four blocks, but that last miss proved crucial as the Knicks became just the third team to win the first two games of the NBA Finals on the road.

They follow in the footsteps of the 1993 Chicago Bulls and 1995 Houston Rockets, both of whom went on to win the title.

New York are currently on a 13-game winning streak in the playoffs, which is the second-longest single-season streak in NBA history behind the 2017 Golden State Warriors championship team that opened their postseason with 15 consecutive victories.

Karl-Anthony Towns had 21 points, 13 rebounds and four assists, Brunson scored 20 to go along with six assists, five boards and five steals, and Mikal Bridges added 20 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Knicks.

"We finally got to a point where he was comfortable, I was comfortable, Jalen was comfortable, OG [Anunoby] was comfortable, Mikal was comfortable. And to me, that's what the regular season's about," Knicks coach Mike Brown said.

"The regular season is about finding your way so you can get prepared for this time of the year. And there's going to be a lot of ups and downs. And I hope there's adversity.

"I hope like hell there's adversity. Because we have to see if we're strong enough when it comes to being connected to see if we can get through it during the regular season. So, when we get here, anything we run into, we've already conquered during the regular season. We'll know how to handle it."
