Lauren Hemp is excited about the momentum Manchester City are already building after their thumping 4-1 win over Aston Villa.

City's Women's Super League title defence has started in style, with two wins from their two games.

Jade Rose, Mary Fowler and Khadija Shaw were all on target for Andree Jeglertz's team at Villa Park, where home defender Mathilde Harviken also scored an own goal.

City are the only team with maximum points in the 2026-27 WSL. It is the first time that only one side have won their opening two games since the 2015 campaign (Chelsea).

And Hemp, who teed up Shaw's goal to move onto 100 goal involvements in the WSL, becoming the seventh player to hit that milestone, is thrilled with City's flying start.

"It's a great result," Hemp told Sky Sports.

"It's obviously nice to score goals and to give it to Bunny [Shaw]; she's always scoring.

"It's always nice to contribute; we've been working hard in pre-season to make sure our performances show when it matters. We pride ourselves on clean sheets, so we want to work on that, but we’re in a good space and confident at the moment.

"We've had different goalscorers in our games so far, and it's important to get the momentum into the next game."

Fowler, meanwhile, suggested she felt back to her normal self for the first time since her return from an ACL injury.

She said: "I've been saying in a lot of interviews that I don't feel fully myself yet since the ACL and I was giving myself the time to feel that.

"I think this is the first time where I actually feel a lot more myself, which is a good feeling.

"I love to problem solve out on the field and I think if my fitness isn’t up there then my thinking is slower. But I feel like things are aligning now and it's getting to a place now where I can just enjoy my football.

"I think mostly it’s a feeling thing. Feeling like myself out there, so it's nice to have that back."

Arsenal, City's likely title rivals, were held to a 0-0 draw by Crystal Palace elsewhere on Sunday.

Kim Little has now made the outright most WSL appearances for Arsenal, with 182, but she could not inspire the Gunners to victory as Palace became the first newly promoted team in the competition's history to keep a clean sheet in an away game against a side that finished the previous season in the top two positions.

Everton, meanwhile, beat Charlton Athletic 1-0 thanks to an own goal, in a match that did not feature a shot on target. It became the second game in WSL history to see zero attempts on target recorded.
