Shai Gilgeous-Alexander capped a historic night by connecting on a 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds remaining, and the Oklahoma City Thunder held on to win a showdown against the Denver Nuggets 129-126 on Monday night.
Oklahoma City appeared to have the game in hand with under two minutes remaining before Nikola Jokić scored nine points in a 57-second span, and Jamal Murray tied the game from the free throw line with nine seconds left.
Gilgeous-Alexander hit two 3-pointers in the game’s final 14 seconds, including the game-winner.
Unable to advance the ball because they were out of timeouts, Denver could only get off a full-court heave at the buzzer in hopes of sending the game to overtime.
Earlier, Gilgeous-Alexander scored at least 20 points for the 126th consecutive game, tying Wilt Chamberlain’s league record. Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 35 points, a career-high 15 assists and nine rebounds with zero turnovers.
Oklahoma City continued to roll despite playing without three starters due to injuries, as Jaylen Williams, Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein remained in street clothes.
Taking advantage of the extra minutes, Jaylin Williams connected on seven 3-pointers to finish with 29 points and 12 rebounds, while Ajay Mitchell scored 24 off the bench.
The win was the Thunder’s (51-15) sixth in a row as they expanded their Western Conference lead over the idle San Antonio Spurs to three games.
Denver (39-26) lost its second consecutive game and fell to 10-13 in their last 23 games. The Nuggets remained in sixth place in the West, but falling to seventh would mean an appearance in the play-in tournament.
Jokić finished with 32 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists for his NBA-leading 23rd triple-double, while Tim Hardaway Jr. made eight 3-pointers off the bench to finish with 28 points.
Aaron Gordon, playing in his second game back from a hamstring strain that kept him out for two months, had 23 points and 10 rebounds while finishing a team-best plus-14 in 28 minutes.
Harden reaches milestone as Cavs top 76ers
James Harden became the ninth player in NBA history to reach the 29,000-point milestone, Keon Ellis played his best game since changing teams, and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the short-handed Philadelphia 76ers 115-101.
Harden, who moved into the top 10 of the league’s all-time scorers earlier this season, scored his 29,000th point on a first-quarter free throw. He finished with 21 points to lead a balanced Cleveland attack.
Ellis, who was also acquired at the trade deadline, shot 4 of 7 from 3-point range to finish with 19 points off the bench. Donovan Mitchell scored 17, and Evan Mobley had 15.
The win marked a bounce-back performance for the Cavaliers (40-25), who lost to the Boston Celtics on Sunday night.
The 76ers (34-30) were forced to play a lineup of players who are typically reserves, with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Paul George and VJ Edgecombe all sidelined.
There was some good news on the injury front, however, as testing showed no fractures in Maxey’s sprained pinkie finger.
Leonard helps Clips hold off Knicks
Kawhi Leonard had 29 points, seven rebounds and eight assists, Bennedict Mathurin scored 28 points off the bench, and the Los Angeles Clippers held off the New York Knicks for a 126-118 win.
Leonard was 10 of 19 from the floor as he continued his resurgent season as the Clippers (32-32) won for the fifth time in their last six games.
Mathurin and Darius Garland, both acquired in major trade-headline moves, combined to hit 10 3-pointers. Garland finished with 23 points and seven assists.
New York outscored Los Angeles 58-42 in the paint but were haunted by 19 turnovers, including 12 live-ball steals.
Karl-Anthony Towns piled up 35 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists before fouling out with just a few seconds remaining.
Jalen Brunson had 28 points and eight assists for the Knicks, who have lost three of their last four amid a tough stretch in their schedule.
OG Anunoby scored 22 points, while Josh Hart added 12 points and 13 rebounds.
