Former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook retires

Veteran point guard and 2016-17 league MVP Russell Westbrook announced his retirement from the NBA in a video on social media on Wednesday.

Westbrook, a nine-time All-Star, retires as the NBA’s all-time leader with 209 triple-doubles.

His 42 triple-doubles during the 2016-17 season are also an NBA record.

Westbrook, 37, posted a video narrated by actor Michael B. Jordan to his social media accounts, showing him touring a museum of his life and basketball accomplishments.

Westbrook averaged 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 6.7 assists in 64 games last season for the Sacramento Kings, his seventh different team in the last eight seasons.

Before he became a journeyman, however, Westbrook became the all-time leading scorer for the Oklahoma City Thunder-Seattle Supersonics franchise.

After Kevin Durant left for the Golden State Warriors, Westbrook became the face of basketball in Oklahoma City.

Drafted fourth overall out of UCLA in 2008, Westbrook entered the league as an explosive athlete and dunker but did not fit the mould of traditional point guards of previous generations.

Westbrook helped redefine the position by scoring over 27,000 points, the 14th most in league history.

With the rise of analytics in NBA front offices, Westbrook’s shot selection became a source of debate later in his career, but his intensity and competitiveness were beyond questioning.

In an era that coined the term “load management,” no one played more NBA games from 2008-09 to 2025-26 than Westbrook’s 1301.

Westbrook averaged 20.9 points, 6.9 rebounds and 8.0 assists over 18 seasons.
