Fenerbahce 1-1 Lyon: Greenwood keeps Champions League play-off finely poised

Mason Greenwood struck early in the second half to leave the Champions League play-off between Fenerbahce and Lyon nicely poised at 1-1 after the first leg.

Lois Openda had put Lyon in front just before half-time, but despite both sides pushing for a late winner, the sides could not be split on Tuesday.

It was a cagey start, with clear-cut chances hard to come by early on despite Tanner Tessman and Greenwood both testing the goalkeepers with tame shots.

Lyon took the first real chance that fell their way, though, with Corentin Tolisso doing brilliantly to open space down the right before clipping a cross to Openda, who flicked his header past Ederson 40 minutes in.

Greenwood fired straight at Dominik Greif once more before the end of the first half, but he then got Fenerbahce off to a fast start after the break, cutting inside from the right to bend his shot into the top-left corner in the 47th minute.

That lit a fire under Lyon, with Openda striking the foot of the left post with a long-range effort before Tolisso and Ernes Nuamah both forced Ederson into sharp saves.

Dorgeles Nene then struck the post from the left side of the box as Fenerbahce piled on some late pressure, but neither side was able to find an advantage to take to Lyon next week.

Champions League stays in touching distance for both sides

It was an intriguing match-up between the sides, with both sides clearly not keen to take too big a risk with so much on the line, as they both remain one match away from a place in this season's Champions League.

This is Fenerbahce's third qualifying round, having won three of their previous four games (D1) and conceding just one goal in that run, while Lyon had to stage a comeback in the last round.

But this was a very even clash. Both teams had 12 shots, with five of those on target, while also hitting the woodwork once apiece.

Lyon edged the expected goals (xG) count 0.76 to 0.43, though Fenerbahce had slightly more possession and had more touches in the opposition box (24 to 14).

Greenwood is no stranger to Lyon, having recently left Marseille to move to the Turkish Super Lig, but this was just his second goal against Paolo Fonseca's side. It could prove to be invaluable to Fenerbahce heading to Groupama Stadium.
