Ellie Kildunne, Jess Breach and Lark Atkin-Davies scored two tries each as England thrashed the United States to open the Women's Rugby World Cup on Friday.

Playing in front of a tournament-record crowd of 42,723 at the Stadium of Light, hosts England ran in 11 tries to get their Pool A campaign off to a sensational start.

Sadia Kabeya, Hannah Botterman, Abby Dow, Amy Cokayne and Maud Muir also went over for England, who were runners-up to New Zealand in the last edition just under three years ago.

Sixteen teams will be competing for the trophy over the next five weeks, with the final scheduled for Twickenham on September 27.

Two-time champions England, who last won the tournament in 2014, will also face Australia and Samoa in Pool A.

Holders New Zealand, who are hunting a record-extending seventh crown, are in Pool C and will go up against Ireland, Japan and Spain.

Canada, Scotland, Wales and Fiji will face off in Pool B, while France, Italy, South Africa and Brazil make up Pool D.
