Kevin Durant is already the United States' most accomplished men's basketball player at the Olympics, but the NBA superstar has eyes on more.

Durant said Monday he told USA Basketball Managing Director Grant Hill he'd like to be in consideration for the Olympic team at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

He made these comments even though he will be nearly 40 years old when the 2028 Games begin.

"I didn’t want to just take my name out of consideration just because of the simple fact that I’m older and I did it before," Durant said after finishing with 18 points and a season-high 12 assists for the Houston Rockets in a 125-105 win over the Utah Jazz. "Grant understands my love for Team USA. That's my family. The level of love I have for Team USA and the whole organisation over there is unmatched, so I'd love to be part of it until I’m done playing."

Durant, 37, is USA men's basketball career scoring leader and has been a member of each of the last four men's Olympic teams - winning gold at each Games.

He is the only American man with four Olympic gold medals in basketball, while United States stars Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird each have won five golds in women's basketball.

"I just love playing for Team USA," he said. "I love representing my country. That's the first and most important thing - it's putting that USA across my chest and representing where I come from."

Although he is one of the NBA's oldest players, the 2013-14 league MVP is still performing at a high level.

Playing in his 18th NBA season, Durant is 11th in the NBA in scoring average at 25.9 points per game, and is also averaging 5.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists while shooting 50.7 per cent from the field and 40.9 per cent on 3-pointers.

Durant was selected to a 16th All-Star Game this year, but acknowledges it won't be easy to earn a roster spot on the next Olympic basketball team.

"I understand how tough that decision is for Grant, and how many great players are going to emerge the next year and a half, and I'm also very old compared to a lot of these players," he said. "I know I've got my work cut out for me to make that team."
