Clippers trading Kawhi Leonard to Raptors

The Los Angeles Clippers have agreed to a trade that would send Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors, multiple media outlets reported on Tuesday.

The reported trade would send Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick two first-round picks and three other draft assets to the Clippers for Leonard.

No deals can be finalised until the start of the new league year on July 6.

The trade was first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The Clippers and Leonard are still being investigated for potential cap circumvention after the two-time Finals MVP received $28million in endorsements from Aspiration, a company with ties to team owner Steve Ballmer.

While the NBA has not concluded its investigation or released its findings, most league insiders have reported that the Clippers – and not Leonard himself – would face any potential punishment.

The trade comes as Leonard is extension-eligible and has one year and $50.3million remaining on his contract. Once the Clippers told Leonard they were unwilling to extend him, he named Toronto as his preferred trade destination, ESPN reported.

Leonard, who turned 35 on Monday, returns to Toronto, where he led the Raptors to the franchise’s only NBA title in 2019.  He joins fellow All-Star forward Scottie Barnes on a roster that also features Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett and Collin-Murray Boyles as they look to build on a 46-36 campaign last season.

Leonard is coming off his best season in a while, averaging 27.9 points and 6.4 rebounds while shooting 50.5% over 65 games, earning him his seventh All-Star appearance and a place on the All-NBA Second Team.

Dealing Leonard represents the end of an era for the Clippers, who previously traded away Paul George, James Harden and Ivica Zubac from a veteran core built to bring serious playoff contention to the newly opened Intuit Dome.

In the Zubac trade, the Clippers received a protected pick from the Indiana Pacers that conveyed this year into the No. 5 selection, which Los Angeles used to draft Illinois guard Keaton Wagler, who appears to be the center of the team’s rebuild.

The Clippers also got younger by acquiring Darius Garland for Harden midway through last season, and they got some promising play from 23-year-old big man Yanic Konan Niederhauser before he was shut down with a foot injury.

Dick, 23, is an interesting prospect who gradually fell out of Toronto’s rotation as his jump shot went cold.

Ingram, who will make $40million this season and has a $41.9million player option in 2027-28, will provide scoring and short-term credibility, but the Clippers appear finally ready for a proper rebuild in a tough Western Conference.
