Championship: Ipswich beat Birmingham to move into automatic promotion places

Ipswich Town took advantage of Millwall's earlier slip-up to move up to second in the Championship with a 2-1 win over Birmingham City.

Millwall's 2-1 loss to Norwich City opened the door to the teams below them, and Ipswich wasted no time in moving into the automatic promotion places, adding extra pressure to Middlesbrough.

Carlos Vicente gave Blues the lead in the 32nd minute, seconds after Kasey McAteer had missed a sitter, but Ben Johnson pulled Ipswich back level just nine minutes later.

McAteer then scored his first goal for Ipswich to turn the game on its head just before the break.

However, there was late controversy as Birmingham had a 70th-minute equaliser disallowed as the referee ruled Ibrahim Osman's ball had gone out of play before it deflected in off Dara O'Shea, though replays showed it had not.

Derby County also boosted their chances of making the play-offs, with a 2-0 victory over Stoke City.

Jaydon Banel and Carlton Morris got the goals for the Rams, who have moved just one point behind sixth-place Wrexham, who face Southampton on Tuesday.

However, Derby have been dealt a potential blow, with Patrick Agyemang leaving the pitch on a stretcher, also throwing into doubt his chances of appearing in a home World Cup this summer.

Roy Hodgson's perfect start to life back at Ashton Gate continued as Bristol City edged to a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United.

Mark Sykes netted the winner in the 23rd minute, backing up the Robins' 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic in Hodgson's first game in charge.

At the other end of the table, Leicester City remain in the relegation zone but fought back to get a point on the board in a 1-1 draw with already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls, who have won just once in the Championship all season, looked set to get a shock victory after Jerry Yates' early goal, but Jordan Ayew salvaged a point for Leicester in the 84th minute.

Data Debrief: Ipswich keep the pressure on

Ipswich are determined to make an immediate return to the Premier League, and after extending their unbeaten streak to eight matches (W5 D3), they are well positioned to do so.

The Tractor Boys also won after conceding the opening goal in the Championship for the first time since March 2024 against Bristol City (ending a run of 16 such games without a win).

McAteer finally broke his duck for the club, and led the attacking line, with four shots worth 1.29 expected goals (xG), two big chances, while he also helped out defensively, winning all four of his tackles.
