Champions League centurion Neuer targetting more European glory

Bayern Munich overcame Chelsea 3-1 in their opening Champions League fixture, and Manuel Neuer feels another European title is a realistic aim.

Six-time European champions Bayern last won the competition in 2020, when they downed Paris Saint-Germain in Lisbon.

Vincent Kompany's team did not play to their full potential in the Champions League last term, losing to eventual runners-up Inter in the last 16, but they kick-started this campaign by seeing off Club World Cup winners Chelsea at Allianz Arena.

Trevoh Chalobah's own goal opened the scoring, before Harry Kane scored twice to seal the game for Bayern, with Cole Palmer on target for the Blues.

In the process, Neuer recorded his 100th victory in the Champions League, in what was his 150th appearance in the competition.

He joins Cristiano Ronaldo (115), Thomas Muller (111) and Iker Casillas (101) as having recorded a century of Champions League wins, and the veteran goalkeeper has set his sights on a title tilt this term.

"We know we were playing against the Club World Cup champions," Neuer told DAZN. "We know Chelsea were in good form. But we're also in good form – we used the momentum to our advantage.

"When you play for Bayern, you always want to win, and that includes the Champions League. That's always the goal.

"We have to go step by step. First, we look to finish in the top eight, and then we go to the knockouts, all the way to the final."

Neuer's sentiment was echoed by Joshua Kimmich, who told reporters: "Our energy is there, you can feel it. It's important that we stay on our path, regardless of the result.

"Not everything was perfect today, especially at the beginning of the second half, but towards the end the team did very well again."

Kane has started the season in fantastic form, registering 13 goal involvements already across all competitions.

His brace against Chelsea took his tally of Champions League goals for Bayern to 21. The former Tottenham star is just the third player to score 20+ goals for two different clubs in the competition, after Cristiano Ronaldo (105 for Real Madrid, 21 for Manchester United) and Neymar (22 for PSG, 21 for Barcelona).

"Physically and mentally, this is the best I've ever felt," the England captain said.

"In this team, I know I'm going to get chances. I just have to keep taking them like I did tonight."

Bayern will look to make it two wins from two when they head to Cyprus to take on Pafos on September 30.
