The Boston Celtics have agreed to trade former Finals MVP Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George and a package of four draft picks, multiple media outlets reported on Wednesday.
The reported trade breaks up the core of a team that won the NBA title just two years ago and ends weeks of tension and speculation about the five-time All-Star’s future in Boston.
No trades can be finalised until the beginning of the league year on July 6.
Brown is coming off his best season in the pros, leading a team that was without Jayson Tatum for most of the season to an unexpected 56-26 record.
But rumours of Brown’s unhappiness in Boston grew after he was reportedly included in a trade offer for Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason.
Brown had also said that last season was the most fun season in his NBA career, despite a first-round playoff exit, leading some to believe he was sick of being considered a sidekick to Tatum.
With the relationship between Brown and the Celtics apparently fractured, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the team was “full-blown shopping” Brown, despite him never formally requesting a trade.

Last season, Brown set career highs in nearly every major statistical category, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 71 games.
Brown, who will turn 30 in October, joins a potent Philadelphia core that includes guards Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe and center Joel Embiid.
The 76ers also agreed to deals with free agents Dean Wade and Ariel Hukporti to add depth in the frontcourt.
The Sixers will need to adapt to adding another offensive creator to the starting line-up, and Joel Embiid’s health always remains in doubt, but the move instantly vaulted Philadelphia into the class of East contenders, with their odds of winning the East on DraftKings rising from 20-1 before the trade to 9-1.
Boston, meanwhile, with slightly worse odds of success next season but with more long-term draft capital and with George’s massive contract expiring a year before Brown’s.
George, 36, had a bit of a renaissance last season as he became more of a role player, but he was limited to 37 games as he recovered from surgery on his left knee last summer.
