Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has backed Harvey Barnes to continue providing "special moments" after the winger signed a new long-term contract with the club.

Barnes' previous deal had two years left to run, and while the length of his new agreement has not been confirmed, he has now committed his future to the Magpies.

Having joined from Leicester City in 2023, Barnes has scored 30 goals from 120 games for Newcastle in all competitions.

The 28-year-old netted 16 goals and provided six assists in 57 appearances for Newcastle last campaign. 

No player provided more goal involvements for the Magpies, with Anthony Gordon also boasting 22. Gordon, who has since joined Barcelona, was also the only Newcastle player to outscore Barnes, netting 17 times in all competitions.

Barnes' 57 appearances were also the most of any player in Howe's squad, even if 24 of those came from the bench, and the Newcastle boss is sure he will continue to play a key role in the future.

"Harvey's new contract is very well deserved and a reflection of the work he's put in and the quality he's shown throughout his three years at Newcastle United," Howe told the club's website.

"Harvey is a player who has consistently produced special moments at vital times for the team. 

"He's calm in front of goal, whether that's one-on-one or from distance, and is always a threat from wide areas.

"Harvey has vast experience at the highest level, but we believe there is still more to come."

2025-26 was the best season of Barnes' career in front of goal, as he bettered the 13 goals he managed for Leicester in both the 2020-21 and 2022-23 campaigns.

His 16 goals in 2025-26 came from an expected goals figure of 13.88, as he registered an xG overperformance of +2.12 – only Nick Woltemade (+2.39, 11 goals from 8.61 xG) fared better among Newcastle players.

Barnes' form last season saw him called up by England boss Thomas Tuchel for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, appearing in the former match, though he was overlooked for the Three Lions' World Cup squad and rejected the chance to represent Scotland at the tournament. 

Newcastle continue their pre-season preparations by facing Bristol City on Wednesday, with games against Valencia, Everton and Bayer Leverkusen also to come before they open their Premier League season against Liverpool on August 23.
