The Minnesota Timberwolves have avoided the worst-case scenario, but Sunday’s injury update on superstar Anthony Edwards hardly feels like good news.
Testing revealed that Edwards did not suffer any ligament damage to his left knee, but he will miss multiple weeks with a bone bruise, media outlets reported on Sunday.
Edwards’ injury occurred during Minnesota’s 112-96 Game 4 win over the Denver Nuggets, which gave the Timberwolves a 3-1 series lead.
Minnesota confirmed earlier reports on Sunday that guard Donte DiVincenzo sustained a ruptured right Achilles tendon in the game, ruling him out for the rest of the playoffs and well into next season.
The backcourt injuries come at a key time for the Timberwolves as they aim to close out a Nuggets team that has been viewed as an inner-circle title contender.
However, Minnesota’s reserve guards have shown promise.
DiVincenzo was injured in the first two minutes of Saturday’s game, and Edwards sustained his injury late in the second quarter, yet the Wolves were able to pull away in the fourth quarter for a statement win.
Deadline acquisition Ayo Dosunmu erupted for 43 points in Saturday's win, the most by a player off the bench in a playoff game since Fred Brown in 1976 (45 points). Bones Hyland struggled shooting the ball from deep but finished with eight points and seven assists in his 20 minutes.
Veteran Mike Conley and second-year guard Terrance Shannon Jr. also saw extra minutes on Saturday.
The Timberwolves will attempt to close out the Nuggets on Monday night in Denver.
