Ampadu: Leeds will take lessons from FA Cup exit into Premier League relegation battle

Leeds United captain Ethan Ampadu believes they will take their learning from their FA Cup defeat to Chelsea into the Premier League run-in.

The Whites lost 1-0 to Chelsea at Wembley Stadium last weekend, ending their hopes of winning the FA Cup for the first time since 1972.

Daniel Farke's side turn their attention back to the Premier League relegation battle, where they have four games remaining, starting with a home match against Burnley.

Leeds are six points clear of 18th-place Tottenham, while the Opta supercomputer gives them just a 1.3% chance of being relegated this term.

And Ampadu is confident Leeds have what it takes to retain their Premier League status for another season.

"We go into every single game with that confidence that we can play, we can show our levels," Ampadu told LUTV.

"I don’t think [it is] anyone’s fault but it is just a lesson to learn to go into these next four [games].

"Our aim, of course, was to go as far as we can in the FA Cup, take it round by round. Once you are here, you want to get into the final, but we have got the Premier League and we want to survive.

"And we have full confidence if we play like we have been in the last few weeks that we can achieve that.

"So, I think we shall get behind each other as we will and push these last four."

Burnley, meanwhile, have already been relegated after a 1-0 loss to Manchester City last time out.

Their average of 9.1 shots per game and three shots on target per game are the lowest in the Premier League this season, and their lowest in a single campaign in the competition.

Martin Dubravka expressed his disappointment at the Clarets' relegation, but is determined to end the season on a high note for the fans.

"I’m disappointed. We wanted to stay in the league but unfortunately, we didn’t do it," said the Burnley goalkeeper.

"The start of the season was a bit tricky I would say. Playing against top teams, we didn’t pick up the points, and you need the points to stay up.

"We were so close on a few occasions, but we didn’t deliver.

"We need to give everything; there’s still four games to play. We need to give something to the fans because they support us every week.

"We want to give back to them for the remaining games."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Leeds United – Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Of all players to have had at least 40 shots in the Premier League this season, Calvert-Lewin has the highest percentage of first-time attempts (79% - 53/67).

The striker has scored 11 goals in the top-flight this term, his third-highest total in a single campaign (16 in 2020-21, 13 in 2019-20).

Burnley – Zian Flemming

Flemming has scored nine Premier League goals this season. The last Burnley player to reach double figures was Chris Wood (12 in 2020-21), while the only player to do so in a season the Clarets were relegated was Danny Ings (11 in 2014-15).

MATCH PREDICTION: LEEDS UNITED WIN

Leeds are unbeaten in their last five Premier League games (W2 D3); they have earned as many points (seven) and scored more goals (seven) in their last three league matches than they had in their previous eight combined (seven points, six goals).

This is the sixth time Leeds are facing a side in the Premier League who have already been relegated, and first since May 2021 against West Brom. They have won each of their previous five by an aggregate score of 18-3.

However, Leeds have failed to score in each of their last three league games against Burnley, having never previously gone back-to-back matches without a goal against the Clarets.

Burnley are looking to complete just their third ever league double over Leeds, after 1926-27 (top-flight) and 2013-14 (Championship).

Burnley have won just one of their last 25 Premier League games (D7 L17), beating Crystal Palace 3-2 in February. However, nine of the Clarets’ last 13 points earned have come away from home.

OPTA WIN PROBABILITY

Leeds United – 62.4%

Draw – 19.9%

Burnley – 17.7%
